Ornamental fountains are beautiful, always in
motion, their dancing waters are entrancing and soothing.
There are three types of fountains, spray, spill and splash.
Spray fountains send the water upwards either in
large columns, or in a delicate mist. The heavier columns of water are
the best to use if you live in a windy area. The misty style of
fountains should only be used in a wind free area.
Spill fountains literally spill from one level to
the other, or spill out from the wall above a still pond. Nurseries and
garden ornament suppliers usually have a range of different wall plaque
fountains, that are very easy to assemble.
Splash fountains are those in which the flow of
water is interrupted by a piece of sculpture.
Fountains look their best when they are located
against a background which dramatizes the waters movement. Dark
backgrounds are ideal.
Another popular way to add water to a garden is
with a water wall. Water cascades from outlets at the top of the wall
and runs down the wall into a pool. You can also purchase sculptures
that control the flow of water so that it becomes a part of the art
form.
Check with your local garden center or specialist
landscape gardener for information on the types of recirculating and
submersible pumps and fountain heads. For a spill fountains you only
need a garden hose and a small recirculating pump, both of which can be
hidden by clever planting and placement of rocks.
All the best and happy gardening,
